Né en 1967 à Arras, Stéphane Calais vit et travaille à Paris. Formé aux Beaux-Arts de Nîmes puis à l’Institut des Hautes Études en Arts Plastiques à Paris, il est considéré comme l’un des artistes français majeurs de sa génération. Nommé pour le Prix de la Fondation Ricard en 2007 et le Prix Marcel Duchamp en 2008, il expose régulièrement en France et à l’international, en galerie comme en institution. Ses œuvres figurent dans d’importantes collections publiques, notamment celle du Musée national d’Art moderne, ainsi que dans de nombreuses collections privées. Il enseigne à la Rijksakademie d’Amsterdam depuis 2008 et est chef d’atelier aux Beaux-Arts de Paris depuis 2019. Peintre avant tout, son travail interroge les formes et leurs possibilités de transformation.
Born in 1967 in Arras, Stéphane Calais lives and works in Paris. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nîmes and at the Institut des Hautes Études en Arts Plastiques in Paris, and is considered one of the leading French artists of his generation. He was nominated for the Fondation Ricard Prize in 2007 and the Marcel Duchamp Prize in 2008. His work has been widely exhibited in France and internationally, in galleries and institutions, and is held in major public collections, including the Musée national d’Art moderne, as well as numerous private collections. He has taught at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam since 2008 and has been head of a studio at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris since 2019. Primarily a painter, his work explores form and its potential transformations.
