Mel Ramos (né en 1935 en Californie) est un artiste américain majeur du Pop Art. D’abord influencé par le surréalisme et l’expressionnisme abstrait, il développe à partir des années 1960 un style figuratif proche de l’hyperréalisme. Diplômé en 1958, il expose pour la première fois à la galerie Bianchini à New York en 1964. Son œuvre explore l’imagerie médiatique et la représentation du corps féminin dans la société de consommation. Après avoir peint des personnages de comics (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman), il élabore une iconographie emblématique mettant en scène des pin-up associées à des produits de grandes marques (Coca-Cola, cigares, ketchup), détournant ainsi les codes de la publicité. Par cette approche, Ramos propose une lecture à la fois critique et ironique des icônes contemporaines. Son travail a fait l’objet de nombreuses expositions internationales, notamment d’une importante rétrospective à l’Albertina de Vienne et à la Villa Stuck de Munich à l’occasion des 50 ans du Pop Art.
Mel Ramos (born 1935 in California) is a major American Pop Art artist. Initially influenced by Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism, he developed from the 1960s onward a figurative style close to hyperrealism. He graduated in 1958 and held his first exhibition at the Bianchini Gallery in New York in 1964. His work explores media imagery and the representation of the female body in consumer society. After painting comic-book characters (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman), he created a distinctive pop iconography featuring nude pin-ups paired with well-known consumer products (Coca-Cola, cigars, ketchup), thus diverting the visual language of advertising. Through this approach, Ramos offers a critical and ironic reading of contemporary icons. His work has been widely exhibited internationally, including a major retrospective at the Albertina in Vienna and the Villa Stuck in Munich on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Pop Art.
