« C’est dans sa capacité à conjuguer le projet graphique à l’image choisie que Valentin van der Meulen révèle sa maîtrise du dessin : la même force qui se dégage du dessin se trouve dans le geste et le regard. Souvent les dessins de sculpteurs témoignent de leurs manières de traiter la pierre, le bois, l’on pense ici à Baselitz ou Dodeigne. Un même poids de la main s’imprime dans la matière. Valentin van der Meulen n’est pas sculpteur, pourtant son dessin parvient à conférer à l’image une présence tangible dans l’espace »

2023 Laureate, we are pleased to announce the upcoming three-month residency of Valentin van der Meulen at the Saint-Ange Residency in Grenoble.
“It is in his ability to combine a graphic project with the chosen image that Valentin van der Meulen reveals his mastery of drawing: the same force that emerges from the drawing is found in the gesture and the gaze. The drawings of sculptors often bear witness to their way of working with stone or wood—one thinks here of Baselitz or Dodeigne. The same weight of the hand is imprinted in the material. Valentin van der Meulen is not a sculptor, yet his drawing succeeds in giving the image a tangible presence in space.”
