La nature morte retrouve enfin les honneurs d’une grande exposition parisienne, 70 ans après la dernière rétrospective à l’Orangerie en 1952. Conçue par Laurence Bertrand Dorléac, cette exposition d’auteure propose une vision nouvelle de ce genre longtemps considéré comme mineur et dont l’intitulé français, né tardivement au XVIIe siècle, n’a jamais satisfait personne. L’expression « nature morte » rend mal compte d’un genre très vivant, qui est, au fond, un agencement de choses en un certain ordre assemblées par l’artiste.

Still life is finally returning to the forefront in a major Parisian exhibition, seventy years after the last retrospective held at the Orangerie in 1952. Conceived by Laurence Bertrand Dorléac, this authorial exhibition offers a renewed perspective on a genre long regarded as minor, and whose French name—coined relatively late in the 17th century—has never truly satisfied anyone. The term “nature morte” (“dead nature”) poorly conveys the vitality of a genre that is, in essence, an arrangement of objects brought together by the artist into a particular order.
